Capital Chaos

New Delhi, the seat of Indian Government is proud to be termed as the city of traders. Trading is in city’s blood. Traders run shops started by their forefathers. But what about the lakhs of citizens who shift their work base from far and near states into Delhi. Every locality, except of course the Lutyen’s Zone, is mushrooming with unauthorized shops, kiosks, hutments, hawkers, pavement shops and encroachments. Part of the rising immigrant population also poses as a major security threat. The Lords and ladies of the Indian Government are unconcerned. To them, the city’s growing population is only a measure of an inflated vote bank. Amidst, serious water and electricity crisis, lakhs of self styled traders further weaken the spine of the dilwalon ki Dilli.
Citizens enjoy their favorite tikki, kulfi or pan in the middle of the road, no matter, it creates road blocks and traffic congestion.
It’s a fact that Delhi's traders have been shaping the politics of the city for years but nobody can deny the magnetic attraction between the chaos of self styled traders and the revenue collectors. What repels our Lords and Ladies from taking stringent decisions for a cleaner and well planned Delhi is non implicit.
The city traders who take a warpath to protect their unauthorized establishments need to be nabbed. No further should the traders be allowed to hold the city to ransom. There has to be some rule of law.
The Lords and the Ladies should bother more about capital’s security, planning, ecology; environment, water, electricity and housing crisis rather than promising livelihood to lakhs of self styled traders. There is an urgent need for shifting the base of non essential businesses out of Delhi.
Delhites shouldn’t accept this chaos as the order of the day. Wake up to discipline India’s capital of the petty trading units and breathe a lighter air.

  1. It seems this is because as a society, we have still not got over the concept of village as the basic dwelling unit.
A city as a civic & administrative dwelling unit is still incomprehensible for most of us which translates in to this apathy. Of course, a lack of vision in the administration also helps.
