Flavours of Television

During one of our WhatsApp chats in the family group , we were discussing the times when television was a rare, unaffordable machine.

We shared our common, sweet and sour memories of slipping into a neighbours' drawing room to watch the most entertaining Chitrahaar.

The simple mindsets coupled with compassionate gestures among neighbors could make watching the 'Sunday Movie ' and 'Chitrahaar ' a relaxing affair once or twice a week.

Those were the times when recreation was mostly a community affair.
From 'Group Leisure Time' to 'Self-centered Fun-time ', the shift in entertainment quotient had been gradual, yet steep.

After a couple of decades of the twenty first century ,watching television has   turned into the most private affair for a solitary viewer.

The Television has undergone transformation from a bulky machine, to a sleek wallpeice ,to a digital App.

A present day television viewer can pick and choose from a cafeteria of entertainment packages.

A blink of an eye can take a rollercoaster ride from food to flavors, from fashion to glamour, from travel to health .
News is no news , but story. Tales told on prime times have no ordinary plots.
The best of thrillers, communal doses prescribed with aggressive discussions are our daily appetite.
In good old days, chit chat shows topped the charts. With a huge leap , debates are now on top.

Way to go for our good old T.V.

  1. One of the biggest attractions to our Delhi visits during summer vacations would be the TV..!! The programmes started at 6 in the evening and ended at 10. I watched EVERY programme during these 4 hours....Yes.... including Krishi Darshan..!! Very rightly pointed out Nikki Di....we heard news then, now we hear stories 😊

    1. Those were the best times. We were relaxed to the core. Hope you remember watching the Hindustani classical dances late night (muted) with loud western rock music from radio.😀

  4. Lots of nostalgia packed in this powerful post, Abhilasha 👏🏼 And your lament about the vicious mess that is TV news today is so apt. Humble appreciation for a very good post 😊🙏🏼

  6. So crisp and well expressed! And such a thought provoking piece! While what you have said about the change is so true, I guess we all have different privacy preferences. Book reading is exactly the same as having your own private entertainment gadget. Comic books for those who want the visual component. And then... TV to bring in audio.
So I guess the need to have your own private entertainment is as old as man is.

  8. Well written Nikki .
Biggest victim of this cacophony on TV has been the reading habit.People would watch a movie or show 100th time rather than pick a book , which anyway is a more enriching experience....Dr Soma
